There’s no question at all in all opinion polls that the majority of people in Scotland are against trident. The problem in the past is that people have felt what can we do? Now it’s not only the public who are there it’s the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament and in fact the majority of Scottish MP at Westminster so we are in a very strong moral position now. The difficulty in these demands however lies in the simple and honest truth of our world. We don’t live in a political and strategic climate where the UK could remove its strategic missile arsenal and submarines and expect to maintain the powers of coercion it currently enjoys. Ignoring the obvious international political absurdity of these people’s demands for a second the domestic consequences would be rather hilarious if quite sad for the protesters themselves. Completely ignorant of the costs involved in shutting down the trident programme in Scotland let alone the many newly-unemployed Scottish nationals who depend on MOD industries and bases for the livelihood. I have to wonder if these idiots would vote for the SNP again when they’ve lost their jobs because their government actually listened to them. It’s something like German residents demanding the closure of Ramstein Airforce Base. Sure it would make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside but can the moral imperative support the families of those thousands of subsequently unemployed peripheral workers? In Scotland the UK’s military presence is a necessary evil as well as a source of economic opportunity for residents. Yet due to ridiculously unrealistic notions on what’s ‘right’ in this day and age the strategic power of the UK might well find itself severely reduced in the future. I can't say I'm very sympathetic to an argument about strategic military force levels based on job losses. Just as with the private sector every unproductive or inefficient job lost would result in more than one productive job created elsewhere. The capital employed in the unproductive business or activity doesn't just disappear; it gets redeployed into more productive ventures elsewhere. That is in principle true even if it's tax money. Either there's a military and geo-strategic argument for keeping Trident (and I agree that there is) or their isn't. Military employment has (or should have) nothing to do with such a decision. Unless of course you believe in the value of Keynesian employment-creating state-funded public works projects too... To be certain economic viability is no reason to keep military assets around. But as I argued it's rather hilarious from an observer's POV when the consequences of removing all Trident and indeed all nuclear military assets from Scottish soil will doubtless cause much anger at the SNP due to the uprooting of families layoffs etc. Sure they'll find employment somewhere else by and large but they'll have retrenched because they quite literally got what they asked for. Generally-speaking of course. I doubt all of those involved in servicing the UK's military presence in Scotland want to have a nuke-free region but still the absurdity exists :) The first problem with your post is that 'the Scottish people who are against Trident' != to 'the people employed on the base'. I strongly doubt that the people who're against Trident are employed by the MOD or work on nuclear bases. Secondly there's nothing to say that the jobs lost by Trident can't be replaced by something else. After all won't the money that they spend on Trident be available for use elsewhere? You could quite easily recast this as guns vs butter issue and argue that the government could spend the money and make more jobs elsewhere more efficiently. Or even give it back as tax cuts. Thirdly if I may be so bold. I'd like to hear reasons for the "absurdity" of Britain giving up its nuclear weapons. Its unclear to me why nuclear weapons are such a critical part of Britain's foreign policy toolkit. When's the last time they needed to threaten someone with nuclear annihilation? The domestic consequences would be hilarious only because they would be so trivial. Firstly the affected people would make up 0.0X percent of the voting population? Secondly. £76 billion spent effectively could create far more jobs and have a far more positive impact on the Scottish economy than trident could ever dream of having. In the future stick to war mongering and steer clear of the economics… Erm if you knew anything about government budgets you might realise that the MOD won't simply hand all the hypothetical savings straight back to the people let alone the Scottish people. Trident is not something to be thrown away on the whim of the people. Likewise. Parrot. I am referring to the PERIPHERAL jobs lost in the areas affected. Like Ramstein if either of you had read the post adequately the entire community is centered around supporting the military. From laundromats to pubs to freakin' baby-sitters all would be very much out of luck if the base was closed thanks to some ill-considered demands. Sure they'd find jobs again but they'll certainly remember why they lost their jobs when they go to the voting stations. MOD will do whatever the hell the govt tells them to do they don’t have some sort of choice over what to do with potential savings their budget will simply be appropriately slashed leaving the govt free to allocate as they wish arguably more effectively.
