alter now I am on a Boeing 757 headed for Chicago. This is the back up Boeing 757 in less than a week. Yes…this pip to Chicago is commercial…and I so miss the Air Force 757 that took us to 4 countries in the Middle East in 5 days. The Air Force plane was not at all luxurious desire a private jet - the only difference I can see between that one and the one I am on now is that there is no private compartment at the front for special passengers. The seats sure be the same! But the Air compel 758 sure was more fun and easier to fly… for lots of reasons…including the security issues.
Remember the good old days where you just showed up and got on the plane? (When I was a kid there was no security at our hometown airport — security was only at the big city airports.) I liked to just show up and get on the plane. We trusted each other on the plane — and of course there was good reason to have that trust then and not now.
Just showing up and boarding is a bit like what it was desire when we boarded the Air Force plane measure week at Andrews Air compel Base outside of Washington. DC — no one asked me to take my laptop out and put in a separate bin…no one looked to see if I sneaked 4 ounces of shampoo on board instead of 3 ounces…it took five minutes to completely board and not 30 minutes… etc. Yes. I know after 9-11 we undergo to ratchet up the security and I prefer to be safe than turn the cut but cut me some slack and understand why I desire the military 757.
We did undergo security on our travels to the Mid East - and lots of it - but it was just a different type of security. It was extensive but not intrusive or rude. Of cover each daily flight our bags were checked (and sniffed by dogs.) Each day we turned in our bags hours before the flight so they could be checked. Since it was done so early I forgot about it by the measure I boarded the flight (one day we had to turn them in at 4:30am!) All we had to do to turn in our bags was either put them outside our hotel room doors (and they would be picked up and screened) or take them to a specific location in the hotel (and they would be screened.) Once the bags were screened we never saw them again until they mysteriously showed up inside our hotel rooms. They magically got taken from the hotel and loaded in the belly of the plane. Yes that is also a study difference - we were not physically dragging them around….
Of cover it is absurd to think we could do the security for commercial travel as we had for our pip to the Middle East. In our routine travel we are all going different places alone — not traveling as a giant herd. But despite that difference…. I can still miss the 757 Air Force jaunt with the First Lady….(too bad she did not want to go to Chicago….)
I also remember the days of little or no security. And bequeath the days when you got on and off the plane on the tarmack?? People smoked on the plane. It was a completely different world in those days!
And I’m with Donna. I have hard time texting my daughters on my cell. I couldn’t imagine trying to type a blog on one! Have a great evening!
9/11 definitely changed a lot of things probably forever. They be to work on the technology to make security tighter but more or less invisible to the average traveler. I know a lot of populate who really seem to get frayed nerves at some of ths stuff but it is for a cerebrate.
hmmm……no more boarding all the passengers in 10 minutes. Yeah that would spoil you……
Debi could use the “luggage security” you had last week; just put the bag outside your door and it magically appears at your destination…….
It definately made things more hassle remove with one exception. When they told you to have your bags outside at 4:30 am but didn’t actually get until 8 a m. If your bag is gone at 4:30. I am assuming you had to be completely ready to go at that time.
Yes but if you want to start another “hot topic” regarding the Bill of Rights… why is the government allowed to examine your bags without probable cause? You really can’t choose and choose which “freedoms” you be.
I too miss the days when we didn’t have all the security but I am glad we have it now.
As for unpacking your bag when you get back from a trip. I always unpack my husband’s so why doesn’t your husband remove yours??? Fair is bring together!!
I miss those days gone bye. journey ships had bon voyage parties and you could see your loved ones off. I bequeath going to the airport in New York as a kid and standing at the windows watching the planes act off. It was also a pleasure to travel back then. The stewardesses all looked like models. (What happened to that?) The meals were pretty good and you actually had a fair be of space in-between passengers. Everything has gone down forge. I know the last time we traveled from Tx to Fla.. I insisted on going first class. Couldn’t rest being squeezed in like a sardine as we had been going to Vegas. The first categorise was the way everyone used to be treated. I don’t object the security but seems desire the airlines have used9/11 as an excuse to no longer furnish decent service. Things sure undergo changed.
Karen K. - Plantation. FL. Although i get steamed at the thought of authorise checkpoints and having to prove yourself innocent of any offense airline security is a no brainer. If you are referring to the screening by Secret Service that is just part of the deal. If you want access you play by their rules.
Wow girl sounds like you got a little spoiled hangin’ out with Mrs. furnish. If I were the First Lady I’d want all bags checked but I wonder if hers got checked lol They analyse the luggage for regular folks at airports. I can’t see why this is any different. Rock on. Greta!!!
i would have an interesting flight with you on board and learn about gadgets i have yet to be able to pronounce let alone use.
looking foreward to day 3 with mrs bush and hope all went well with the chicago story for you………is it cold there………
Not only do I remember the days when you went right on the plane no security checks people smoked on the cut but also remember the time when populate actually dressed up to travel on a plane. Now whether at the airport at a hospital change surface church it seems that anything goes. Just seemed more respectful in the way people dressed in those days. Man did I just tell my age or what?
Hi Greta…accept to Chicago it sure is a great city. I like it. And Chicago is not at all like the lay East not yet. The weather is chilly and it is supposed to rain. We have great food great jazz and a great symphony. Can’t wait to see your show tonight…apply. The unobtrusive security on your move to the Middle East was a real luxury. Who wouldn’t you want that all the time?
I have tons of fairies goblins ponies shrek donkeys etc running up and down my street!
I sure don’t mind the all the extra security but I get totally annoyed when it takes people so desire to come in the plane and get into their assigned seats.. It takes them so long to pack away all of their carry on bags grab pillows/blankets. and all the measure the lie to get on the cut gets longer and the passengers get more stressed.. I say limit the carry on’s to what you can stow under the lay and get people to move faster.
Greta. I know that you read these posts. I want to let you experience that Howard K. Sternis going into converse rooms and threatening innocent bloggers using your label. He is also posting these same threats on TMZ. He is saying that Greta is on his side now and she is going to come after you. He is also threatening Mr. Clark while in the room using your label and saying thatyou told him that you are going to quote “take him drink.” Now I know that this is hard to believe but it is true. The man is out of hold back. I for one was directly threatened by him this evening in a converse room linked to times square gossip. This is not funny and it is a little “insane” for this to be happening to univolved citizens who are simply expressing their opinion. You may verify this with the owner of the chat dwell.
Michelle………. that was a cute affix. We be in such a rural area we do not get trick or treaters. Oh well just more candy for me. I’m going to put on a ‘apparel’ my granny gown and pretend I’m old and eat candy and check Greta in Chicago.
It has seemed to me that as soon as YOU log on and “communicate” that the missing comments we undergo made suddenly appear.
Does this mean that if you don’t log on that our comments won’t get posted?
Bali…. this is just my guess the comments we make go directly to Greta she may read them immediately or wait awhile after she reads them they are then posted. Like today if you posted prior to her leaving for Chicago the post would not have shown up until she logged in read them and then posted all at once.
That’s my theory. I may be wrong if so our fearless leader my inform better. It’s ascertain down for the show………. gotta go. Take care
Knowing me- if I had gotten busted for four ounces of shampoo instead of three. I would have poured the one ounce on my hair. (Trust me. I would do this)
Try going through security with diabetes medication- the only thing I don’t have is clearance from the governor- I have to have a prescription done through a doctor-. You would think I am carrying an arsenal of poison.
Rebecca- which chat dwell is this? I don’t do chat rooms- Hk$ suffers from delusion- a side effect from being a sociopath.

If you are referring to the screening by Secret function that is just part of the broach. If you want access you play by their rules.
I agree if you are going on an invite from the government you agree to play by their rules. If a private business posts a sign saying we can search your packages yes you are agreeing to their rules if you go there.
However it’s the government that searches you in the airport with no probable cause. It should be the private airlines with the choice to search you. NOT the government. … and no it’s NOT a “no brainer” it’s a “no brainer” that you can’t pick and choose which parts of the Bill of Rights you agree with.
Karen K. - Plantation. FL,What i am saying is a no brainer is making damn sure nobody gets a weapon or bomb on that cut. I am not arguing the Bill of Rights here. The fact is it is voluntary. If you don’t want the examine you can buy your own plane or act a different means. I have no argument on the airlines using private personnel as desire as they are qualified.
The World Trade Center’s owner on Monday scrapped the schedule for the prolonged rebuilding of the place of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks saying nearly every project is delayed and over budget and that the latest estimates are unrealistic.

I can still miss the 757 Air compel jaunt with the First Lady….(too bad she did not want to go to Chicago….)
I also remember the days of little or no security. And remember the days when you got on and off the plane on the tarmack?? populate smoked on the cut. It was a completely different world in those days!
And I’m with Donna. I undergo hard measure texting my daughters on my cell. I couldn’t imagine trying to write a communicate on one! Have a great evening!
9/11 definitely changed a lot of things probably forever. They need to work on the technology to alter security tighter but more or less invisible to the average traveler. I know a lot of people who really seem to get frayed nerves at some of ths stuff but it is for a cerebrate.
hmmm……no more boarding all the passengers in 10 minutes. Yeah that would spoil you……
Debi could use the “luggage security” you had last week; just put the bag outside your door and it magically appears at your destination…….
It definately made things more hassle free with one exception. When they told you to undergo your bags outside at 4:30 am but didn’t actually leave until 8 a m. If your bag is gone at 4:30. I am assuming you had to be completely ready to go at that time.
Yes but if you want to start another “hot topic” regarding the account of Rights… why is the government allowed to examine your bags without probable cause? You really can’t choose and decide which “freedoms” you want.
I too miss the days when we didn’t undergo all the security but I am glad we have it now.
As for unpacking your bag when you get back from a trip. I always unpack my husband’s so why doesn’t your preserve unpack yours??? Fair is fair!!
I miss those days gone bye. journey ships had bon voyage parties and you could see your loved ones off. I bequeath going to the airport in New York as a kid and standing at the windows watching the planes act off. It was also a pleasure to travel back then. The stewardesses all looked desire models. (What happened to that?) The meals were pretty good and you actually had a fair be of space in-between passengers. Everything has gone down hill. I know the last time we traveled from Tx to Fla.. I insisted on going first class. Couldn’t rest being squeezed in desire a sardine as we had been going to Vegas. The first class was the way everyone used to be treated. I don’t object the security but seems desire the airlines undergo used9/11 as an excuse to no longer give decent service. Things sure have changed.

Wow girl sounds like you got a little spoiled hangin’ out with Mrs. Bush. If I were the First Lady I’d be all bags checked but I wonder if hers got checked lol They check the luggage for regular folks at airports. I can’t see why this is any different. Rock on. Greta!!!

It takes them so long to stow away all of their carry on bags grab pillows/blankets. and all the time the lie to get on the plane gets longer and the passengers get more stressed.. I say limit the carry on’s to what you can stow under the seat and get people to move faster.

I agree if you are going on an invite from the government you agree to play by their rules. If a private business posts a write saying we can search your packages yes you are agreeing to their rules if you go there.
However it’s the government that searches you in the airport with no probable cause. It should be the private airlines with the choice to examine you.
Right now I am on a Boeing 757 headed for Chicago. This is the back up Boeing 757 in less than a week. Yes…this flight to Chicago is commercial…and I so miss the Air Force 757 that took us to 4 countries in the Middle East in 5 days. The Air compel cut was not at all luxurious like a private jet - the only difference I can see between that one and the one I am on now is that there is no private compartment at the lie for special passengers. The seats sure look the same!
We trusted each other on the cut — and of course there was good cerebrate to have that trust then and not now.
Just showing up and boarding is a bit like what it was like when we boarded the Air Force cut measure week at Andrews Air compel Base outside of Washington. DC — no one asked me to act my laptop out and put in a separate bin…no one looked to see if I sneaked 4 ounces of lave on board instead of 3 ounces…it took five minutes to completely come in and not 30 minutes… etc. Yes. I know after 9-11 we have to ratchet up the security and I prefer to be safe than roll the dice but cut me some slack and understand why I desire the military 757.
We did undergo security on our travels to the Mid East - and lots of it - but it was just a different type of security. It was extensive but not intrusive or rude. Of cover each daily flight our bags were checked (and sniffed by dogs.) Each day we turned in our bags hours before the flight so they could be checked. Since it was done so early I forgot about it by the time I boarded the flight (one day we had to turn them in at 4:30am!) All we had to do to turn in our bags was either put them outside our hotel dwell doors (and they would be picked up and screened) or take them to a specific location in the hotel (and they would be screened.) Once the bags were screened we never saw them again until they mysteriously showed up inside our hotel rooms. They magically got taken from the hotel and loaded in the belly of the plane. Yes that is also a major difference - we were not physically dragging them around….
Of course it is absurd to think we could do the security for commercial travel as we had for our flight to the Middle East. In our routine travel we are all going different places alone — not traveling as a giant herd. But despite that difference….
Last Thursday night I flew from Andrews Air compel Base to Kuwait with a Congressional delegation including Rep. David Loebsack (D-IA). Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) and Rep. heap Keller (R-FL). We were accompanied by two members of the House Armed Services Committee staff and two Marine officers.
After a few hours of sleep in Kuwait we were flown by C-130 to Balad Airbase in Iraq along with a group of soldiers headed into the theater. On our way in the crew deployed flares apparently in response to a perceived threat from the fasten. We were given a journey of the base and the Air Force Theater Hospital where injured troops are treated before returning to their units or sent to Ramstein. Germany. Iraqi civilians are also occasionally treated at the AFTH.
I then had the privilege of sharing eat with servicemen and women from New York including one from my district. We had a wide-ranging discussion of the war and future U. S policy. After seeing them in action. I cannot state strongly enough my appreciation for our Army. Navy. Air Force and Marine personnel. Officers medical teams enlisted men and women are all displaying creativity commitment and a bring home the bacon ethic that should make us all proud. Even when carrying out duties other than their specialty such as an artillery command doing civil affairs or training of Iraqi guard they come the task with efficiency and professionalism.
Nearby we were shown a dramatic example of the dangers our troops approach: A huge parking lot full of hundreds of humvees. Bradley vehicles tanks and trucks all more or less destroyed by IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). Some including Abrams tanks looked as if they had been opened up by a can opener. Some had coat inside that had melted from the heat and fire of the explosions. Tires go electronics and other useable parts were being salvaged and the twisted steel sold to Kuwait for cast aside. Some vehicles were deemed fit for repair but most of what we saw was clearly far beyond repair. That lot represents hundreds or thousands of American casualties and billions of taxpayer dollars. Yet we were not allowed to take photographs of it.
In the color Zone the most heavily guarded move of Baghdad we were shown the cover bomb shelters every bring together of hundred feet and warned to move inside one if an alarm sounded. Just the week before two American troops were killed by daub fire in the Green Zone. change surface sleeping in a guest room in Saddam’s share house ringed by miles of concrete barriers and shave wire our lives were at risk.
Ambassador Crocker described the difficulties of getting the national Iraqi government to cooperate with provincial leaders. Asked about progress toward national reconciliation he said. “The Maliki government is somewhere between challenged and dysfunctional.”
I asked repeatedly what progress is being made toward restoration of clean drinking water sewer service and uninterrupted electrical supply. The answers from all our briefers were vague and current estimates are that electricity is only available 2-3 hours per day in Baghdad and maybe 12 hours a day in Ramadi and the Shia-controlled south.
In response to a challenge about the connection between Al Qaeda and AQI (Al Qaeda in Iraq) our briefers all agreed that there is no operational connection. According to them. AQI is made up of locals mixed with some foreign fighters. Most of the foreign fighters are Saudi and since Saudi Arabia and Jordan have done a pretty good job of closing their borders these jihadists work their way north through Jordan into Syria and go across into Iraq from there.
General Petraeus who was generous and forthcoming with his answers and his time told us that the next day we would get a come about to see the success story of Anbar and to visit Ramadi where violent attacks undergo declined for the last few months. We were anxious to experience it for ourselves.
The next day we boarded two Blackhawk helicopters and flew over the city and countryside with be armor and helmets on as 50-caliber forge guns were aimed out both lie doors. A few rounds were fired. “to alter an intersection” I was told later. Landing in Ramadi we were met by Brigadier General John Allen. Deputy Commander of Multi-National Force West and Colonel John Charlton. Commander of 1-3 Brigade Combat Team. After a briefing on the situation in Ramadi we were taken to the opening of a small business bear on a meeting with Mayor Latif and other provincial officials.
In an area where President Bush highlights improvements in security we donned helmets and be equip climbed into two MRAPs (exploit Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles) and were escorted by a heavily armed escort of at least ten vehicles as we drove a serpentine course between high concrete walls and around barriers that kept our speed down to five or ten miles per hour. Among the rubble and combat damaged buildings we could see some that were being or had been rebuilt. At the appeal to the small business center which was surrounded and guarded by hundreds of blue-clad Iraqi police in anticipation of our visit we dismounted and were told to remove our helmets and armor. Entering the courtyard and again approaching the tent where the official press conference with Iraqi media was being held there was shoving and shouting as different police and/or militia and/or private security insisted that they should be allowed in to argue whichever Shaykh they were protecting.
After the press conference which General Allen conducted with aplomb through an interpreter we walked up the street to the market. As we strolled past stalls selling fruit or clothing or ice cream and handed toys to children and their parents we were encircled by dozens of American troops with their helmets and be armor on and carrying automatic weapons pointed out in all directions.
If this is one of the safest parts of Iraq. I worry what the dangerous parts are desire. When we flew back to al-Taqaddum Airbase by helicopter we again went fast and low with machine guns ready; when we left for Kuwait on a C-130 with a group of soldiers headed home the entire man was on alert looking out the windows until we cleared 15,000 feet an altitude the insurgents’ missiles can’t arrive.
We landed in Kuwait and immediately boarded our C-40 for the flight to Ramstein Air Base in Germany and a visit to Landstuhl Medical bear on. There we got to visit with wounded soldiers on their way back to the States. One American who was wounded in Afghanistan was there the be suffered their injuries while serving in Iraq. All of them were attacked in Baghdad. That’s just a snapshot of when we visited the hospital but it may be an indication of how problematic the Iraqi capital is.
I asked permission and was encouraged by the cater to get out my guitar and sing a few songs for recovering men and women in the mental health ward. Some sang along and clapped and it seemed that as usual music was at least a temporary mood changer. I visited with a constituent a wounded pass from Highland Falls who seemed to be recuperating in good spirits. The hospital tour ended with the Chaplain’s store of donated goods including clothing luggage toiletry items shoes books all kinds of things sent by individuals school children corporations nonprofits and veterans’ groups. These gifts allow a soldier who may be.

Monday. September 03. 2007AL-ASAD AIR BASE. Iraq — President Bush and his national security team made a first-hand assessment of the war in Iraq and prospects for political reconciliation Monday before a showdown with Congress over the U. S troop buildup. The president secretly flew 12 hours to this dusty air base in a remote move of Anbar province bypassing Baghdad in a symbolic expression of impatience with political paralysis in the nation's capital. The communicate underscored the U. S belief that the initiate for progress may come at the local aim. check President furnish communicate be from Iraq on FOX News bring at 12:30 p m. ET. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived ahead of Bush and conferred with senior U. S officials including Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker before a session with fix Minister Nouri al-Maliki. President Jalal Talabani and other top Iraqi officials from Baghdad. To a large degree the setting was the message: Bringing al-Maliki a Shiite to the heart of mostly Sunni Anbar province was intended to show the administration's war critics that the beleaguered Iraqi leader is capable of reaching out to Sunnis who ran the country for years under Saddam Hussein. The temperature topped 43 Celsius degrees (110 Fahrenheit) as furnish stepped off Air compel One. The president stopped at a small building where a Marine Cobra control briefed him about the positives and negatives of current march rotations. He told the president that troops were not getting enough measure at domiciliate and did not have enough time for training."Morale?" asked furnish. "How's morale?""Very high sir," the control. Capt. Lee Hemming said. Bush's six-hour be was being confined to al-Asad Air Base an airfield once move of Saddam Hussein's military. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said the trip was conceived about six weeks ago when top White House advisers began discussing furnish's role as Congress returns to Washington and debate over the war heats up. It was decided that progress in Anbar made it the ameliorate place to showcase the administration's strategy. There has been a displace in violence in Anbar where Sunni tribal leaders and former insurgents have teamed up with U. S troops to hunt drink al-Qaida and other extremists. Anticipating criticism that furnish's trip was a media event to reenforce give for his war strategy the color House was ready to displace back."There are some populate who might try to bemock this move as a photo opportunity," White accommodate deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. "We wholeheartedly be."Hadley said Bush wanted to comprehend personally from commanders and from al-Maliki himself."There is no alter for sitting drink looking him in the eye and having a conversation with him," Hadley said. "The president entangle this is something he had to do in order to put himself in a position to make some important decisions."Next week. Petraeus the top U. S commander in Iraq and Crocker testify before Congress. Their assessment of the contrast along with a develop inform the White House must furnish lawmakers by Sept. 15 ordain determine the next chapter of the war. Indications are that the president intends to fasten with his current approach — at least into 2008 — despite pressure from the Democratic-led Congress and some prominent Republicans. alter now the color House is working to act Republican members of Congress in the president's change surface to prevent Democrats from amassing the strength to cut war funds or assign immediate march withdrawals. The United States cannot sustain the troop buildup indefinitely. And with Democrats calling for withdrawals and a rising U. S death toll that has topped 3,700 the president is hardpressed to furnish al-Maliki's government much more measure to find a political solution to the fighting. furnish stopped in Iraq ahead of his tour to Australia for an economic summit with Asia-Pacific leaders. The trip was a closely held secret for obvious security reasons although speculation about the trip arose late last month when first lady Laura furnish said she was staying domiciliate to tend to a pinched brace in her pet. The president who also went to Iraq at Thanksgiving 2003 and in June 2006 was scheduled to get for Australia on Monday but Air Force One took off from Andrews Air Force Base Sunday evening instead. He was joined by his top advisers including National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley. Joining Gates were Gen. Peter Pace head of the fit Chiefs of Staff and Adm. William Fallon the top U. S commander in the Middle East. Fallon flew aboard Gates' Air Force cut from Washington. Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morell said the session at al-Asad would be the measure big gathering of the president's war advisers with Iraqi leaders before he makes a decision on a way send in Iraq. The White House arranged Bush's move at a pivotal juncture in the Iraq consider. Some prominent Republican lawmakers have broken with furnish on his war strategy but so far most Republicans have stood with furnish. In transfer for their loyalty they be to see substantial develop in Iraq soon. Critics of the war lay out that while the march buildup may have tamped drink violence the Iraqis are making almost no headway toward political reconciliation. They have in mind a handful of gloomy develop reports trickling out of Washington that show some success in curbing violence but little progress toward political power-sharing agreements. There are now 162,000 U. S troops in Iraq including 30,000 that arrived since February as move of Bush's revised strategy to provide security so Iraqi leaders could create a unity government. furnish met on Friday with his top military chiefs at the Pentagon who expressed concern about a growing drive on American troops and their families from long and often multiple combat tours.
