by Airman Elliott Sprehe27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs11/6/2007 - CANNON AIR FORCE BASE. N. M. -- The era of the 27th Fighter Wing. Cannon's former host unit got one step closer to its end Saturday night at the Landing during the 522nd Fighter Squadron's dining out. The Fireballs who recently returned from an Aerospace Expeditionary Force deployment to Guam celebrated their rich history in style over the course of the night. Attired in mess dress the Airmen of the Fireballs wore red bow ties and red cummerbunds to show their true "colors." Their wives dressed in red dresses as well showing their support for their husbands and the unit. "It's an opportunity to bring in and celebrate the conclusion of an era for the Fireballs as we inactivate," said Lt. Col. Tod Fingal the Fireballs commander. The 522nd FS has been active since the early 1940s and has called Cannon home since 1959. They were Cannon's first F-16 fighter squadron and have dropped thousands of pounds of munitions during innumerable deployments. Though the Fireballs returned to Cannon after the base changed to the 27th Special Operations Wing they still received the support of wing leadership as though they were not a tenant unit on base said Colonel Fingal. "Instead of us returning to base as a detachment where we were sharing a base with (Air Force Special Operations Command). AFSOC in turn said 'this is Cannon AFB this is your home and we are here as a team,'" said Colonel Fingal. Attending the dining out were a number of squadron group and wing commanders former Fireball commanders and local community leaders who all showed their support through toasts and camaraderie. "We're all a little sad to see the squadron close but happy that we got to celebrate it," said Capt. Jason Monaco of the Fireballs. The Fireballs emblem a blue background and cloud formation represents the theater where the mission is performed. A fireball represents the crushing attacks the squadron directed on the enemy from above. The Fireballs are scheduled for inactivation in December although one day they may be called on to flame up one more time.

Constitutional law required compulsory military service to all German men between the ages of 17 to 45 excluding only members of ruling houses criminals and those deprived of their civil rights. The German Military was divided into six land based groups which were of the following: Artillery Calvary Technical Troops Infantry Military Supply Engineer or innovate Air Force (started at the end of the century) During this time military function was compulsory and it was considered a great recognise to defend your country. The completion of a military man’s service to the fatherland was a milestone to be commemorated. At the completion of his active duty and to go away his reserve service to his country the soldier either purchased or was presented with a commemorative stein. These steins were considered a badge of recognise by the men who had served in the German military. Each stein was custom made and decorated with information relating to the unit that the military man had served with. The pewter lids were either cone or dome shaped with ornamental designs and the tops were crowned with figurines or symbols of the unit group. Names of fellow men in the unit were displayed in columns on either side of the handles. The unit name along with a picture depicting the unit he served in was on the lie of the stein. "Texans target Cannon pilots" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 21:26:16

by Chief Master Sgt. Gary Emery27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs9/6/2007 - hit AIR compel locate. N. M. -- A bring together of Texans rode into New Mexico last week looking for a few good pilots. Two instructor pilots and their T -6A Texan II trainers from the 12th Flying Training Wing at Randolph AFB. Texas visited here Aug. 23-24 to provide orientation flights to 27th Fighter Wing pilots. The goal according to Maj. Tommy Hudnall from Randolph's 559th Flying Training Squadron was to interest Cannon's F-16 Fighting hunt pilots in becoming instructors on the Texan. "We're trying to encourage more fighter influence in the (pilot training) environment," Major Hudnall said. "With the fighter wing here closing down it was a perfect opportunity to furnish rides in the T-6 and introduce the aircraft's capabilities to some F-16 pilots." The program is the brainchild of a former Fighting hunt driver the visiting instructors said. "The 12th Ops Group commander. Col. Christopher Weggeman sponsored the schedule," said Maj. Paul Dupuis. "He's a "16" guy and it was his idea to back up carry more fighter affect into the "white jet" (trainer) world," the major said. "We believe ourselves airpower's blacksmiths," study Dupuis said. "And we be to beat Air compel aviators with a contend mentality early on." Major Dupuis who has served as a T-38C Talon instructor control and spent more than five years as an enlisted pararescueman is also a former F -16 pilot in Cannon's "Hounds of Heaven" 524th Fighter Squadron. The turboprop Texan II which replaces the 1950s-era T-37 Tweet as the Air compel's entry-level trainer in fit primary control training has a world of advantages over its predecessor. Major Hudnall said. "It has higher performance than the T-37 excellent visibility outstanding fuel economy and a pressurized cockpit," he said. A "furnish cockpit," which substitutes multi-function screen displays for traditional and outmoded round gauges as well as front-to-rear tandem seating eases students' convert to the high-performance T-38C and modem contend aircraft the major said. Experience counts for a lot in the instructor pilot world said study Hudnall whose background includes measure in several "heavy" aircraft including transports. "The T-6 community has a great mix of pilots from various study weapons systems," he said. We have fighter bomber tanker and transport pilots we have tons of experience." Local pilots were impressed with the Texan II. The observations of Maj. heap Wageman. 27th FW fighter enhancement schedule manager were typical. "It can move like a gnat," he said after his pip with study Dupuis. "I would go fly that thing in a heartbeat - it must be an awesome aircraft to instruct in and learn in." Lt. Col. Ancel Yarbrough. 27th FW Chief of Safety echoed those sentiments after his flight. "My first thought was "Every pilot should undergo one of these,"" he said. Lieutenant Colonel Yarbrough a former F-16 instructor pilot also gave high marks to the T-6 as a trainer. "There are great rewards to being an instructor and seeing students progress. I evaluate (the T-6) is a good drive for that and instructing new pilots in it would be a rewarding venture for anyone." Another recruiting move to Cannon is planned in the near future. study Hudnall said. "We've had very positive feedback from everyone so far," he said. "This has been a ameliorate opportunity to get (hit) pilots interested in flying the T-6."

"Filling Squares - Doing the right thing for the right reason" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:46:35

Commentary by Lt. Col. Beachel Curtis27th Fighter Wing director of plans and inspections8/21/2007 - CANNON AIR compel locate. N. M. -- Success. Almost everyone desires it - particularly the "type A" personalities who gravitate toward military service. How do you achieve it? Can you guarantee it? Between basic human nature and today's performance-oriented society the achievement of some level of success is the benchmark of our daily efforts. It could be argued that it is the fuel for our dominance as a species. A common method for accomplishing a goal is to observe those who have achieved what one desires and attempt to codify their efforts in an attempt to find that "recipe" for success. If a pattern emerges perhaps it is a road map - a series of measured steps to be followed. Surely what works for one successful person will create similar prove to those who follow the same path. This method of analysis often produces a checklist of experiences the "approved solution" for success. The danger with this approach occurs when the primary emphasis becomes "filling the squares" instead of achieving the appropriate experiences. We've all seen it.. people who inform for every activity or write up for every organization half-heartedly participating at beat and then happily checking off the squares on their list considering themselves come up on the way to success. What is lost on these folks is that the populate whom they're aping were successful because of the experiences and skills they gained not merely because they filled the squares. What made them successful was the organizational and interpersonal tools they put in their "drive kit" while working with that inform organization or leading that project. Thinking of those squares as experiences to obtain and not just activities to end ordain help decrease the risk of becoming "over pedigreed". If you truly want to be successful. I could evaluate of no greater tragedy than to finally get your opportunity and then sight yourself ill prepared. Don't carry a pocket knife to a gun contend. Whether it's continued education. PME physical fitness or volunteer work that square is there for a reason. A successful person has used that experience to develop themselves. There's nothing wrong with filling a square - just do it for the alter reason.
