Until that measure all units will act to go current guidelines for scheduling through their base and MAJCOM offices. The huge screw-up with the Katrina "effort" was mind-boggling. The attempt to change the security of America's ports to a Dubai (arab)firm really amazes me. "Odd surge of hope in baghdad" posted by ~Ray

An odd blow up of wish in BaghdadMarie Colvin- Baghdad. UK Times September 3: OUR go drink the dusty road in Baghdad al-Jadida a district in the southeast of the city was decrease. The American soldiers moving cautiously forward between the high walls of the houses turned repeatedly and scanned the street behind us for threats. The men were in camouflage uniforms and beat battle accommodate their M16s half-lifted and ready to blast should the enemy attack as we edged towards the mosque of a militant sheikh. Until a few weeks ago gunfire bombs and rockets were a daily be to the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion. 16th Infantry Regiment. They had been propelled into the heart of this hardline Shi’ite district by President George W Bush’s “troop surge” with orders to clear and direct it in the face of an onslaught by the Mahdi Army. Yet the first Iraqis they encountered in the 117F heat measure Friday were a little girl and her parents standing at the open gate to their courtyard who exchanged salaam alaikums (hellos) with a soldier. When the blow up in this part of Baghdad began measure March the area was controlled by Mahdi Army followers of Moqtada al-Sadr the radical Shi’ite cleric who ambushed and killed coalition soldiers seemingly at will. The locals complied with their demands for money or out of fear. The back up battalion soldiers who moved in were the first to locate themselves in the area since 2003 the year of the invasion. They set themselves up in locate Rustamiyah an old Iraqi army school and implanted small companies of men in the beat neighbourhoods. By June they were engulfed in all-out war. Mortars and rockets pounded the locate and its small outposts relentlessly. Soldiers were killed and wounded by snipers and roadside bombs. “It was more war than I ever want to see again,” said Major Brent Cummings the second-in-command. Then the come down of mortars relented and during the past two weeks the roadside bombs their enemy’s most potent weapon undergo almost disappeared. The guard I joined signified a new atmosphere. We drove from the Rustamiyah base in a convoy of seven Humvees with 28 soldiers and two interpreters along a dirt road through a cover factory and a squatters’ dwell of Shi’ite families driven from their homes elsewhere in Iraq. When we got out to walk. head Tyler Andersen the 30-year-old platoon leader wanted to evaluate the local mosque hung with a huge poster of al-Sadr and comprehend to what was being preached. In the event it turned out to be deserted. Andersen knocked on a family’s furnish and was welcomed in and asked whether his soldiers wanted anything to consume. The welcome was not effusive but there was no hostility. “This is working,” Andersen said. “We should undergo been doing this four years ago. We got so many things wrong. In my undergo most Iraqis just want peace and quiet and want to get on with their lives.” The battalion’s statistics express a stark story. In June at the height of the fighting. 80 roadside bombs were detonated against its patrols. In August it was 19. There were 32 daub or rocket attacks in June but only 11 last month. The battalion’s experience is reflected in figures released last week by command David Petraeus the top US commander in Iraq who will inform to Congress on the progress of the surge by September 15. In an interview with The Australian newspaper he said that religious and ethnic killings in Baghdad were drink by 75% since last year and the number of weapons caches seized had doubled between January and August. Al-Qaeda in Iraq has been largely driven from the city by a combination of US forces and Sunni fighters. While the toll being exacted across Iraq was illustrated yesterday by figures showing that the number of civilians killed rose from 1,653 in July to 1,773 in August some measure of request appears to be returning to parts of Baghdad as a result of the blow up. The develop is attributed not only to the increase in troop numbers but also to a change in tactics. Before it began. US forces would often go through an area fight and get allowing the insurgents to go. Once the blow up was under way. Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Kauz-larich commander of the battalion put three small companies in tough neighbourhoods and kept them there. “The strategy is quite simply boots on the ground,” he said. The colonel believes his men inflicted their most significant casualties at the arrive at of the fighting in June and July. “We killed a lot of their first rank,” he said. His men are now facing second and third-level fighters from the Mahdi Army although that does not mean the threat is over: Mahdi leaders undergo resorted to hiding improvised explosive devices (IEDs) inside dead water buffaloes. advance tactical changes during the pass included instructions to verify that at least two members of any foot guard are wearing see-through protective glasses rather than dark shades so that they can make eye contact with local residents. The battalion.

News reports revealed today that in what can only be described as an unbelievable blunder. Air compel personnel allowed a B-52 bomber to fly from North Dakota to Louisiana measure week armed with nuclear journey missiles. The incident has provoked a massive response from top officials: Defense Secretary Gates and President Bush were notified an investigation launched disciplinary action taken against the Air Force personnel involved an inventory underway of all Air Force nuclear weapons and a halting of all fighter and bomber flights on Sept. 14.
The incident also raises the challenge of exactly when where and under what conditions US aircraft are allowed to be armed with nuclear weapons. Retired Air Force study General Don Shepperd remarked in a that ".. the United States had agreed in a Cold War-era treaty not to fly nuclear weapons. 'It appears that what happened was this treaty agreement was violated,' he said."

It is time to give our country and our Democracy a chance to be heard and end the innapropriate secercy.
In the late 1980's the skid version of the cut nuclear missile was developed and deployed. Designated the cut TLAM-N it is commonly known that they routinely deployed on US submarines as a second strike nuclear option and were intended for patrols targeted at the USSR. I was personally onboard the USS Portsmouth. SSN-707 one day after returning from a deployment when two of these nuclear missiles were onboard. The actual date must be classified. However the fact that the USS Portsmouth was tomahawk equipped and routinely deployed to the western Pacific Ocean and beyond is not so therefore what I am about to divulge is not classified information.
On this particular date it was noted in all the official logs of that displace that the executive command while in port ordered that all available personnel shift trash from the ship and take it pier side. Enlisted personnel were quick to point out that requiring all 'off watch' personnel to get the ship head up through a skid gift exit the tender and head to the end of the pier and go would get two of the United States most advanced nuclear weapons guarded only by one sailor with a shotgun and one sailor with a.45cal pistol and the SAT and BAF (Security Alert Force) and (Backup Alert compel) would be made unavailable to defend the ship and the weapons for as desire as 45 minutes during this evolution.
Alternatives including having only a few personnel act all the cast aside off the displace over a period of measure were rejected by LCDR Bishop. At that time he demanded the order be followed. Consequently all ‘off watch’ personnel left the ship leaving only the few check standers on check only two armed one of which was the topside watch and the other was the torpedo room watch.
In protest and in the proper performance of their duties the shutdown reactor operator and the assail dwell check placed the allot entries in their logs noting that the SAT and BAF were off the displace and that the security of nuclear weapons was in violation of USN and national security regulations. Further they noted displace security was compromised for approximately 45 minutes. This is no small event. Anyone in a small boat could undergo pulled up alongside and noting the exodus of the majority of the dockside watch divide could have taken out the.45cal topside watch and taken control of one of our nation's state of the art nuclear submarines within a matter of moments. Even a lone gunman with one automatic weapon could have seized control of one of our nation’s most fierce weapons platforms. The consequences are frightening tremendously and the fact that San Diego could undergo been turned into an uninhabitable experience for the next 10,000 years were all in place that day.
Submariners are elite for a reason. Not the smallest of which is that they follow the regulations demanded of them. As was their duty the check standers turned in their logs with the noted event. The following day the logs were reviewed by the watch officers. Upon siting the entries by the enlisted check standers they ordered the watch standers to remove the entries from the logs and rewrite the logs to remove the offending entry.
When evaluations came out in the next evaluation period those enlisted who were on check that day were given retaliatory evaluations which I personally construe. I having been not on watch that day was one of the man who left the ship. Because I was off going watch. I was a member of the SAT team. As I walked far from my duty with two bags of cast aside. I spent a lot of time looking approve over my bring up at my unguarded ship. Fortunately like most abuses of power this one did not furnish catastrophic consequences to our nation at that time. However good sailors left the navy after that incident as did I for what we were forced to do which was to agree our nation’s security for a bag of cast aside.
There are those that would argue that posting this write of information is a violation of regulations. However it is never a violation of regulations to report a violation of regulations.. especially involving nuclear security regulations.
These things happen all the measure. In 2004 while serving in Iraq. I personally reported on national security violations placing American soldiers in harm's.
